Site Chat changes and Other Stuff
Posted by Keyser (Admin) at Jul 25 2009, 10:55:13 AM. 0 comments
This is a modified version of the last beta news update I did on the site itself, I edited it to sound more relevant to people not testing the site. Thought I would share this as the site is getting just days away from being fully opened.
- "Keyser"
After all the work getting the Site Chat doing what I wanted and looking how I wanted... completely scrapped it. The problem I was having was it was conflicting with a few other modifications I had been doing. I have, however, gotten another chat solution up and running, I have not done any sort of modifying to it at all yet, but I certainly will be. It is fully functional right now, and shouldn't break now when I'm modding the site from now on. One major step up from the other chat is that there is now an online list specifically for the chat itself, it will display the names of who is in the chat, and if they are online, idle, or offline. Overall I'm liking the new chat much better, if only for the fact it won't conflict with other codes lol.
I've also modified the User Menu look, moved the User Control Panel link into that and taken it out of the header links.
As I mentioned in the last First Look, another addition in the last couple days is the Status updates. I put the link to update your status into the User Menu, when you click it, a new menu slides into view, it's a pretty cool effect. What you type into it will show up directly underneath your name in your posts, and you can update it directly from the User Menu on any page, no need to go into the UCP or anything too complicated, it will update the site with you new status right away, well... on next page load at least, but the site database will be updated immediately. I also have a few more things to do with this feature, not entirely done with it yet.
One last thing for this news update. I have another feature I'm about ready to get working on, probably tonight after work. Since I haven't yet implemented it I can't guarantee it will stay (I'm hoping it will...) and so don't want to say too much about it, but I'll give you a hint as to what it is:
...FML

First Look: User Menu and Status Updates
Posted by Keyser (Admin) at Jul 24 2009, 11:56:34 AM. 0 comments
For this first look I bring you two features, the User Menu and Status Updates!
The User Menu
A simple block, this is always found on the right-hand side right at the top. It shows you your current avatar, and gives you quick access to a number of common tasks, such viewing your bookmarks and updating your new status.

Status Updates
A very cool social feature that let's you keep everyone updated with what you're doing. Just click on Update status in your User Menu, then type in what you're doing into the menu that pops up, it's that easy!

This will then display your status in your mini-profile next to all of your posts! Update is whenever you like, as often as you like!

The release of the site is getting closer, keep checking back for updates!

First Look: Arcade
Posted by Keyser (Admin) at Jul 21 2009, 05:32:16 PM. 0 comments

The new version of the Arcade has received a nice shiny new coat of paint, and is still just as easy to dive right into to start passing that time!
There will be a lot more games included this time around, and to accommodate them all they'll be broken down by a larger set of categories. Initially there will only be a handful of games available, but this number will steadily grow as more games are added in each week, keeping the content fresh.
When you've won a highscore, you can show it off in every one of your posts now that your highscores are being displayed in your mini-profile!

And when you lose that high score, you can get a PM alert sent to you to let you know who beat it, so you can go claim it right back!
The release of the new website is getting close! Keep checking back for more updates!

First Look: Featured Linkshell
Posted by Keyser (Admin) at Jul 17 2009, 02:39:24 PM. 0 comments

The next First Look is on the new Featured Linkshell system. This will be prominently displayed to all guests and registered users that are not currently in a linkshell group hosted on the website. As you can see, it will display a group avatar underneath the linkshells name, information about the linkshells forum group including its leader, membership status, and how many members (based on the number of registered users in the forum group), as well as displaying a brief description of the linkshell.
For linkshells, this will help to create more exposure, showing up on prospective new members screens, and providing a link right to your fully customizable Linkshell Home Page*. Linkshell leaders will have the ability to change the "about us" text, the group avatar, the group color (member names will be displayed in this color), and other options on a group management page.
Stay tuned here for more First Looks coming soon!
*Linkshell Home Pages are a featured still being developed and will be released at a later date.
